How is the neck plate mounted on the leather cover? You don’t have a direct connection between the body and neck. Doesn’t this cause neck instability because of the leather in between?

The photos are of a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster, named the “Saddle Tele”, that I collaborated on a number of years ago with master-builder Chris Fleming. He specified that the Tele would have a top-loader bridge mounted directly to the leather and have the neck plate also mounted on top of the leather covering on the back. I asked him the same questions about neck stability and also vibration transfer of the bridge mounted on top of the leather, but that’s what he wanted.
Although I no longer offer the covered Tele body, on subsequent builds, I mounted a neckplate directly to the body of the Tele before bonding the leather to it. After the covering was completed, I used a sharp forstner drill bit to cut holes through the leather for the neck screws.
